How hack-friendly is your password? Have you or a close friend or family member ever experienced online identity theft? This is a growing online threat to all who use the World Wide Web. Reports show that households earning $100k + per year have the highest identity fraud rate at 7.4%. With that being said in year 2011, 11.6 million adults were victims of identity fraud which accumulated a total of $18 billion lost. Did you know that the average household cost per person having identities stolen is approximately $1,513.00 and that for me is just too large of a risk?
What many do not know is that with the ever growing use of social media and smartphone’s our threat of fraud is growing at a fast pace. Statistics show that 6.6% of smartphone owners are affected with identity theft, 6.8% of social media users who click on the applications are at risk of identity theft, 8.2% of social media users who have “checked in” using their smartphone GPS are at risk and 10.1% of LinkedIn users are also at risk of identity theft.
These stats are just too high for me. While reading more on LifeLock’s website I found that if you have only 6 characters in your password with no symbol, it only takes a professional .000224 seconds. If you have 10 characters and one symbol in your password, it takes up to 20 days for a professional to break in. This seems a little better to me. How secure is your online banking, personal information and overall privacy? This information made me go in and update my passwords right away.
